Macro lens won't work

Hi, This is my first question on this site, hope someone can help me. I have a new Canon EOS T3. My first digital! Most my "old" lens fit it and take pretty good pictures, tho I am still learning the camera.

I have been trying to get my Macro lens to work for me and for some reason it keeps saying to clean the connectors. So I took it in a shop here and they cleaned them. Took a few pics, and the warning started up again. Now nothing. I know this lens is old, may be time for a new one. But how do I clean the connectors? I was always told not to mess with them. Plus I have never come up with this before on any of my old cameras.

Anyone have any advice for me? Thanks in advance

AFAIK the camera can't tell if the connectors are dirty or if there's a bad connection in the lens electronics, as you've already had the connectors cleaned I suspect latter. Did the shop also test the circuitry?
