I was wandering what macro lens you would suggest for a Nikon D3100?? I really want one but not sure what would be the best

What type of macro shots are you planning to shoot?

If you are wanting a macro lens for insects, bugs and creepy crawlies, I would suggest a longer focal length like the Nikkor 105mm. The reason is the a longer focal length will give you more working room and lessens the chance of scaring off the critters with your presence. The 105mm is a wonderful lens for portraits as well, however it does give off football shaped bokeh on specular highlights. For static objects you can get by with a shorter focal length.

Love my 105 VR Micro. Awesome piece of glass. Get one.

Everyone said exactly what i thought.. I want the 105mm.. thanks for the help everyone.. now if i can find one at a GREAT price..lol

I have the tokina 100mm 2.8 macro lens, absolutely great lens.

The least expensive option is the nikon 105mm f4 ais manual focus lens. It won't meter with your d3100 but that isn't as big of issue as many people think (dslrs have instant exposure feedback), and macro work is best focused manually anyway.

Typically people use extension tubes when doing macro work--which let you focus even closer. If you want to maintain autofocus and metering with an af-s lens you need "cpu" tubes. Manual tubes, which u use with mf lenses, are MUCH cheaper then computerized tubes. So when u factor in all the costs the older mf setups are much cheaper--around $200, instead of $700.

I was about to recommend this lens, as well as the Tamron 90mm.

I believe most of the dedicated macro lenses are quite good optically. Just pick the one that fit your price range.
For insect shots, I will recommend starting from 90mm or longer so that you can keep a reasonable distance from the subject.

I also have this lens and agree! Much cheaper than the Nikkor lens and built just as well. Tokinas are tanks.

I hear good things about the Tamron 90mm, but im a tamron fan also.

Great optics, slow AF, for the most part.
