I would like to get a macro lense for my Canon AE-1 Program at some point. What would be a good mm macro to get? Also can new Canon film lenses be used on the old cameras? Do both types use the same mount?

thanks!

The AE-1 uses Canon 'FD' lenses. FD are Canon's manual focus lenses. Canon stopped making FD lenses about 1988 and started making EF (autofocus) lenses for their EOS film cameras. Of course now they have EOS digital cameras and they can use EF lenses that were originally designed for film.

So No, you can't use any new Canon lenses because they are all EF and will not mount to your camera which has an FD mount.

Because FD lenses are practically obsolete, you can get a great deal on them...on the used market. Just go on E-bay (or wherever) and search for 'FD Macro lens'.

I would also check the following:

Tamron 90mm f2.5 Macro 1:2 in Adaptall mount
+
Tamron 2x teleconverter specifically for the 90mm macro which gets you 1:1
+
Adaptall FD mount
+
Whatever inexpensive ring light you can afford.
