Madison Rowley in Studio (New Shoot)

A client of mine recently started letting me borrow his studio and lighting gear to experiment with, and it's been a really fun experience and I've been learning a lot. I got my friend Madison to model for me for the first of what I hope to be many shoots in this studio. I have a limited amount of time in the studio because there are other photographers who rent here, so a lot of time is spent trying to figure things out,, and I don't get as many shots as I'd like. I had a great internship a couple years ago that taught me a lot about lighting, but I was never tasked with handling the lighting gear so I didn't learn a whole lot about assembling things. Since I primarily shoot in natural/available light, a lot of the aspects of studio lighting are unfamiliar to me. I tried using some color gels as well for this shoot, but they were a little more difficult to understand than I had anticipated, and I don't feel like I got any keepers from that. I plan to keep trying on that though. I did however get some shots that I really like from a single light setup though.

The lighting was a Profoto D1 Air 500w in a 47" zeppelin parabolic softbox.

Madison also requested a shot that shows off the new gold lettering on the tins of his own brand of mustache wax.

It is always so much fun learning something new!

#2 Is that strongest looking one to me. It would be an incredible advertising photo!

Really nicely done Dan. I'm not sure they have the same "whoah" factor that your natural light work typically does, but they're a damn bit better than a large portion of studio work I've seen from other photographers. Well executed, but I still think your forte is natural light

Excellent work as always. Good job on the studio lighting. I pretty much think that photographers who understand well natural light usually do wonders in studio too. You keep it simple and definitively less is often more!
