The first thing I notice is how dirty the water is. The angle is also the same angle I'd look at them from at if I were there - maybe try something very low to the ground for a point of view.

This was in a park in Nashville, TN. The water had a lot of debris on it. There was no way to get low unless one got in the water and probably arrested in the process. The pond was surrounded by an walkway and a stone retaining wall. I agree with all you said.
