55-200mm kit lens
sun as hair light and a flash with flash bender large as a fill light

DOF is sufficient, background sufficiently OOF, focus looks good.
little bit of a hotspot on her forehead, but overall a nice shot.
some might call it a tad underexposed, but I dont think its too bad.

Thanks for the look I also used a variable ND filter and shot this through my garage into my back yard to get the DOF.

A very nice portrait! Good lighting, good frame, good pose! One of the rare horizontal frames of a head and shoulders portrait that is O.K.

Nicely done, nice backlighting, nice framing and sharpness.
It is a bit disconcerting because I know she is backlit and I expect her face to be sort of in the shade but she looks like she is being lit from the front also. (highlights and exposure.)
She looks a bit pallid to me.

The light on her skin is just too direct and I know throwing enough power to overcome the ambient is a battle. It takes some work with light placement (angle) and dry (not sweaty) skin to get this and then what little glare you do get can be corrected, if necessary, in post.

It's not easy and especially with a tiny light source.

I agree maybe a soft box would have rendered a more suitable outcome.

Diffusion socks are a good option for out of doors use.

Yes, I work alone so I have no one to hold my stands and anything more than a 7" reflector on my AB800 is asking for it to eat sand. If I had an assistant ( i don't want one ) I'd use a large silver beauty Dish and maybe a sock. Probably.

I have a DIY sock that my wife made for me. All you need is a bit of scrap fabric, some elastic and a needle and thread.
