Mayoral Candidate and his Dad

An action shot that I took while on the campaign trail last year when a friend of mine was running for mayor.

One comment. How am I supposed to know from your photo that he is running for anything?

Well, the photo isn't supposed to say that he's running for mayor. That was just a little fun fact. lol.

The photo, at least to me, is supposed to indicate a hearty conversation between father and son.

I'm looking for what's right and wrong about this photograph, how something like this could be improved. If there are any good qualities to it whatsoever.

Focus should be on the young man and not Dad's hair. The lighting contrast (direct sidlight sunshine) is too high and needs fill, which would have been a disaster if you used camera flash given that Dad is so much closer; so a reflector on the right would have been the answer.

Posted in another one of your pictures. I kind of went over what I thought about action shots there, so I'll let that be.

Feels more like a snapshot than a composed picture. The back of the fathers head is in focus, and your friends face is soft / just out of focus. Because of your positioning there is now way to tell there is a conversation going on. The friend doesn't appear to be talking, nor does the father. I almost get the vibe that dad is imparting some sort of advice or I'm proud moment. But to better capture that feeling you should try to compose the picture a little better.

I agree. The focus is a little strange. Is the focus the hair? There are also super-harsh shadows and it seems too contrasty for a color photograph in the midday sun. His eyes also get lost in the shadow a bit.

It also might be cropped a bit too closely? It feels a bit claustrophobic

OK. Fine. But I don't get the hearty conversation between dad and son either. Or, are we supposed to get that from them wearing the same shirt?


And I agree with everyone else about the wrong focus.

Why do you keep posting pics of your friend and advertising his campaign?

..the campaign ended like...last November, so I'm obviously not.

I'm just getting opinions and critique on different aspects of the photos I've taken over the past year.
