I recently returned from a 7 day road trip around Lake Michigan. I was hoping to see Fall colors, but that was not to be. However, I did see several lighthouses, waterfalls and interesting small towns along my 2,000 journey. Here are a dozen images from the trip:

1- Bond Falls...this was my first stop. This waterfall has been on my wish list for a decade.

2- Point Iroquois Lighthouse...that's Lake Superior in the background. You can practically see Canada from here.

3- I guess this is an ordinary duck. It looked extraordinary enough for me to capture a photograph, though.
p3290453473-5.jpg

4- There was some color along this creek in the Porcupine Mountains
p3290453084-5.jpg

5- Eagle Harbor Lighthouse...it always takes a while for the flag to fly into the right position!

6- Lighthouse lace curtains

7- Whitefish Point Lighthouse...the Great Lakes are treacherous. There is a museum on the grounds here devoted to hundreds of shipwrecks near here.

8- Lake Superior stones
p3290453289-5.jpg

9- Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church...this is the third oldest parish in the United States (after St. Augustine and Santa Fe)
p3290453509-5.jpg

10- Sault Ste. Marie City Hall
p3290453439-5.jpg

11- Pine needles on asphalt
p3290453141-5.jpg

12- I had to walk three miles to capture this picture of the Au Sable Light Station. My plantar fasciitis wasn't very happy with me.

Next up, South Dakota!

Thanks for looking...

Looks like an enjoyable trip.

Excellent imagery. I live in Michigan but I work way too many hours. The last thing I want to do is drive on my day off. The wife sort of retired (not her spending) so I have to pay the bills. We were going to drive north this Friday (10-8) but calling for rain all day so I'm working it. Not going to waste a day off to shoot fall colors in the rain. Looks like I'll miss it again this year.

I was initially very disappointed about the lack of Fall colors as that was the purpose of my trip. Later, I did enjoy the trip because I very much like lighthouses!

I think the colors are much better now than when I was there. A little rain should help bring even more color out--provided that it's not raining while you are shooting.

Fall colors in the rain are some of my favorite shots, especially if you can add in some low clouds and mist. And the plus is less people out there.

Very good set.....
Thanks Jeff

Thank you...that's one of those shots that you don't plan for when making the trip. But, it's what keeps photography fun for me.

Really enjoyed … those really represent the UP well. Nice images. Memories of my childhood, and similar photo excursions. Being from MN, I tend to gravitate to the Northshore vs Southshore. Some nice color this year, but I got up to Lutsen and the 9 parks along the shore a bit late. Here are a few samples. And some serious fog. Looking forward to your S. Dakota shots. Jim

Those are great photos of the UP! I like Iroquois Point because you can move a few feet left or right and get a completely different perspective using the stone wall as a reference point.

The lighthouse at Whitefish Point, while not "traditional" is a study in practical architecture. I did a number of photos of this lighthouse from the shoreline including some interesting driftwood.

Ah, the Au Sable Lighthouse! I, too, thought I had to trek several miles to get there. However, a couple of fishermen at a creek outlet to Lake Superior, told me about a shortcut, and I took it. It's only about a 1/2 mile from the creek, but well-hidden. You exit the trail on the left side of the lighthouse. You can get a couple of great perspectives from the right side of the lighthouse.

While a bit late, if you get back to the Marquette area, there's a lighthouse/BnB at Big Bay de Noc. The scene out to Lake Superior is stunning, especially at sunset.

Thanks for the tour, and good luck in South Dakota!
