Monitor calibration

How do you go about calibrating a monitor cheaply?

I have a Flatron w2252tq which is too bright, and I suspect the colors are oversaturating. It doesn't bother me usually but with photography I'd like to be on the same page as everyone else.

To do it properly, you need a hardware calibration device.

I use the Pantone hueyPRO, got it for a pretty good deal on eBay, literally half the retail price so I've been using that for quite a few months now.
