Moon with my 70-200 + 1.7 TC

First moon shot with my new TC. The exif says 340mm but do the 1.5 for the crop factor and i get 510mm!

Nice shot Defy. I may have dropped it a bit lower in the crop.

200 x 1.7 = 340. That's all you get I'm afraid. The cropped sensor does not play part of the equation for focal length.

I know it's still a 340 on my camera but that would be an equivalent 510 on a 35mm/FX camera right? So to get the same shot with an FX i would need a 500mm lens, am i thinking right?

Yes and no. It would give you the same point of view of a 500mm lens on a full frame camera. It doesn't actually give you the reach.

Your lens is a 70-200mm. The true focal length was 200mm. Using a 1.7x crop gets you to 340mm - your camera knew of the crop factor and recorded THAT in the EXIF, not the true focal length of the lens. Claiming you got a 510mm focal length from a 200mm lens implies you have a 2.55x crop factor.

If you REALLY like shooting the moon, get the biggest focal length lens you can afford (you can get used MF gear rather cheaply off of ebay and whatnot) and add you TC. you wont have to crop very much, and you gget awesome

Here is a shot of the moon I took with my Sigma 500mm f/8, bought from a friend for 40 dollars.

its cropped, im dont remember how much, probaly a lot....the bar above the picture will tell you how much. the original size is 3008x2000 pixels.
