You could easily be correct...the two species look pretty similar in terms of body shape, profile, and tail fork, caudle peduncle size in relation to body,etc...
For those who are interested, there's some NICE ID charts from the Connecticut fisheries regs here, on the web. http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/fishing/anglers_guide/anguide_part4.pdf
It "might" also be a Hickory shad too...what makes me think it's not a snapper bluefish though is the lack of a fin on the dorsal side, right in front of the tail's fork...I can see an anal fin, but can NOT see an opposing fin on the dorsal side, the presence ofwhich would ID it as a snapper bluefish...still looks like a shad to me...anyway...I'd check that osprey on bag limits and license next time you get a chance!
(I love ospreys! The osprey is such a cool bird species! An aerial-diving, fish-hunting bird! How cool is that!? We have quite a few of them around here, and I ALWAYS LOVE to see one hit the water and then come flapping up, loaded down with a thrashin' fish in its talons! Soooooo cool! And that "I just caught a fish!" cry--an awesome sound if there ever was one.)
Daily bag limit of snapper bluefish in Connecticut waters is TEN fish per day: is this osprey perhaps a law-breaker??? Over-limit???
