Complete noob btw. So how did you get the black background again? I always see photos with black background with shadowy effect on objects. I have always wondered if it's done by setting a camera to a specific mode or it's just photo editing effects.
 
It depends on the photo.

It can be a actual black background (t-shirt, foam board, felt, velvet, paper, speaker enclosure, whatever).

The background can be made black using shutter speed and strobed lighting, which is what I did in this image that had a light gray background:

The background can be made black using image editing software.

For shooting smoke, it's easiest to use a black background because the strobed light isn't all that strong.
