Moth Reflection - CnC

Took this picture tonight. To me, it just seems like there is something missing. I had cropped out part of its antennae to make it straight. I really like this picture, just seems like there is something missing. Any advice for next time?

I love the pic. I think you might have too tight a crop, though. A little more space for both the subject and the reflection might add some.

The on-camera flash is whats hurting this image. Overpowered, directional lighting.

Ah, yes. What, in your opinion, would have been the best angle of light for this shot?
Edit: Now that you said that it seems so blatantly obvious when I look at it.

An adjustment to your EV would have helped. Looks like camera was trying to average the dark background with the lighter body of the moth. Setting it to -1 EV would help compensate for this.

A subject with this orientation I would probably hold the flash a foot above the subject and fire just about, but not quite straight down.
