Multiple subject photography

So the other day I was looking through my friends photos and I found a picture that really struck my curiosity. Here's a picture that's similar to his image:

I know you would have to use a tripod and have multiple shots of the subject in different places correct? But what program would I be able to use in order to put the layers on top of each other, etc.? I don't have photoshop yet so would GIMP or something as basic as Picnik work out?

Don't be so cheap, at the minimum get one of the Photoshop Elements programs for editing. They will do about 85% of what the full blown PS program will. It's only about $79 at a lot of retailers. You will be happy once you do...... except for the longing for the other 15% you will want the program to do later once you start editing.

The possibilities for doing what you want are endless and don't just apply to things in motion...
