The lens itself isn't that bad really, it's the all terrain vehicle you have to mount it on that gets expensive.

Also, Sigma and Tamron both sell really cheap versions of this lens. Do you have any opinion on the lenses? Thanks

I got the Tamron 70-300 recently for a great price and so far I really like it. I bought it specifically for travel to compliment my Sigma 17-70. The OS really locks in focus but the longer range does take some getting used to and I've found that I really have to concentrate on my hand holding technique to be successful. I usually add my 50 or 35mm to those 2, depending on the situation.

Try upping your shutter speed - that will help a lot at the longer focal lengths. 1 x focal length is good, 2 x focal length is better, so at 300 mm 1/320 is good, something in the 1/640 range is better.

As far as I know Tamron does make this lens in a Canon mount. It's the 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 VC

The new version of the Tamron with VC is $450. That is the one I got but I bought it when there was a $100 rebate so a great price IMO. Took this shot of my dog just the other day. handheld at 300mm, F9, ss 1/100

It's a great shot, but for some reason the dog looks less than impressed.. lol

Yeah, he's pretty sick of having his picture taken at this point. He's much rather sit on my lap and watch tv.

If you can only have one lens to take on a trip I recommend the
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens
. This is a workhorse with a long history of use and praise. We use ours on a 6D and a 7Dii on the 6D you get the full wide angle. Read the reviews, there are scads of them. As I said this is one fo the older Canon lens still being made and for good reason....it is GOOD!

If you really think you will need some more focal length then put a 1.4x extender in your pocket.

I've seen this lens a lot in camera bundles. Thanks for suggesting it - I'll see if I can get it in a bundle with my new camera
