Wide angle lens for a D750???

I recently purchased a Nikon D750 and paired it with the Nikon 28-300mm lens. So far I love the camera and lens and it will be a great travel setup. However, what do you think the best option for a wide angle lens for travel would be? I am seriously eyeballing a Nikon 20mm f1.8G. Is 20mm wide enough or should I go wider?

I will be shooting streets, people, landscapes and inside of churches on our next trip.

My favorite and most used lens is an 18-200mm. Little short for animals but for mot things everything I need is there. I don't think I'm good enough to make a fixed lens work for me.

This would be in addition to my current 28-300mm lens. I plan on travelling to Europe again this fall and want to carry as little as possible, but I don't want to hamstring myself.

Is the 28-300 a full-frame lens or is it designed for the crop sensors? if it's a crop lens, the D750 will automatically (unless options changed) change to crop mode and you'll lose the wide end. 20mm should be wide enough, on full frame, for most things. My walk-around is the 24-70 and it's fine for what I do. If I want wider, at this point, I just shoot a pano and merge in LR.

It is a full frame lens, so no crop mode. I was looking at some of the photos I took last year in Italy with my Canon T7i and the majority were taken with the 18-135mm. Probably less than 20% of the photos were taken with the 10-18mm(16-28.8mm with the crop factor). I am also looking to have a lens for some night time photos also.

I really haven't used LR yet and I forgot about merging photos together. I could take my 50mm 1.8G and use it for nighttime and just merge pics if needed.

I just wonder if the 16-35mm is too big for traveling. I’m trying to keep what I bring to a minimum. I am also toying with a D7500 also. I came across a great deal on one with less than 5000 shutter count.

Have you considered a Nikon manual focus prime? They can be had cheap compared to new AF lenses and build quality is superior to current glass. Auto focus on wide angle primes is superfluous IMHO unless you're shooting moving subjects. In your case size is much smaller than the zoom wide angles.

I actually have a few of the manual focus lens(135mm, 105mm and 55mm) and have thought about picking up a 20mm so I could just throw it in my pocket. Everything I’ve read and seen comparison wise the 20mm G lens is superior optically although not build wise.

I lust for a Zeiss Distagon 15mm f2.8 Zf. Not small not cheap but a rectilinear wide angle that can be had cheaper than the Nikon 15MM f3.5. I'd like to have the Nikon but it goes for the same as the Zeiss does. Great glass but not a Zeiss.

I've used the 16-35 with a d750 and it balances well with it. The d7500 is a good choice with a 12-24 as well. I have owned both and the IQ of both is more than adequate for travel. Biggest difference that I noticed was DoF for given f/stop. In this case the d7500 because it has an APS-C sensor and not a full frame sensor like the d750, will give you 1 stop deeper DoF per f/stop. Otherwise you would have to pixel peep the deep shadows or shoot at really high iso to see much difference. Comparing the 2, (imho) the d7500 would be the better choice for travel. The only drawback would be that it only has 1 SD card and not 2 like the d750.

I use a Nikkor 16-35 f4 on a Nikon D750 body and have had excellent results.

Its a bit heavier and slower but wider on one end and longer on the other than the fixed 20.

The fixed 20 seems to be a tad sharper.

Either should do a good job for you.

My WA photography is a smaller part of what I shoot however, so having a 16 and a 20 and a 24 and a 28 and a 35 wouldn't fit my needs while a quality fixed f stop zoom would.

If one is looking at top quality period, and does a lot of landscape/architecture work and doesn't mind sneaker zoom the 20 would be a better choice.

If you are young, athletic, in shape and can afford it ... you can't beat a bag of fixed lenses.

Now I'm 68y 11m old, active and in better shape than most my age and can afford it better than ever before ... I chose carefully the few that I carry with me.

Ya know, get a wide angle lens for a 35mm and you know to get a wide angle lens. Get one for a digital and you need to know which digital it is. I have it in my head that wide angle is wide angle. Idea is 35mm were cameras. Digital well, maybe! Slowly starting to get it after about 20 yrs with digital, seem's everything has changed!
