My first attempt of a portrait

So I am just starting to learn photography and had a friend of mine pose for some "portraits" this weekend. This is my first attempt, let me know what ya'll think.

How do you think you accomplished your goals? What was your intent with this image? Do you feel you accomplished your vision? Why? Why not?

This shot doesn't have a feeling of a purposed shoot. Rather it appears to be a random shot of some performer taken in a hasty manner.
