My first attempts at portraits in studio

I feel like there is something wrong with the lighting on the face, seems too harsh? The portraits were kind of rushed and not well thoughtout. These were experiments with a lighting setup borrowed from a friend. Let me know what I'm doing wrong or if its ok...thanks!

Should mention what the lighting set up was. The two shots do not look the same, lighting wise - one thing you always want to focus on is consistency between shots; you can see from the skin tones that we kind of missed that here.
