My First DSLR!

Check out refurbished Nikons from Adorama. I picked up a D3100 w/18-55 VR for $350.00 and it works nicely.

Keep in mind that there is Entry Level and then there is Entry Level.

I have no experience with the Canon lineup but I suspect it is similar to Nikon in that you truly do get what you pay for. If you get a bottom of the entry level grade camera body then you are going to run up against the limitations of that body very, very quickly. Low maximum shutter speed, relatively short shutter life, relatively poor higher ISO performance, having to dig through menu after menu to get to settings, and so forth. I never recommend anything on Nikon's lineup lower than the D5100 because I am of the opinion that the difference between the D5100 and anything lower is WELL worth the difference. You can either save and buy something decent now or you can start all over again in 6 months.

Personally my recommendation would be a used Nikon D90.

Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted here. I've saved up some money and currently have about $260. I found a t1i body on KEH for $275. I think I might pull the trigger and purchase it. I'll then get a used 18-55 or 50mm lens. The camera is listed in KEH's "excellent" condition. Do any of you have any experiences purchasing equipment in this condition from KEH? Also, should I go with an 18-55 or 50mm for my first lens? (I plan on owning both eventually)

I can't comment of KEH, but I would recommend the 18-55mm over the 50mm because it offers a wider range (wide angle to small telephoto).

I have to second this, only because as a newbie myself to DSLR (when I was in high school we had all manual ,wow have times changed) I went straight to the most expensive one I could afford for the same reasons. I am limited budget wise , so I really do NOT want to be outgrowing a camera only to have to buy a new one a year later,or even sooner. And then be stuck with it because i couldn't afford to buy another. KWIM Especially after investing in lenses that may not be compatible with whatever upgrade camera I were to end up buying.
But I do understand how hard it is to wait,and wait for something better when you want something now, and it probably feels like it will be forever with such a tight budget and only being in high school. That is one reason I never had my own decent camera until now. $ just didn't allow for it, and I'm in my 30's ! If I couldn't afford much , I would be happy with the canon. I think it is really nice. But if you are serious about photography I personally think you would outgrow it too fast. BUt if you can wait , maybe even a little while. Im sure you can save a few more hundred $ and get a used D5200 camera body on ebay. I tried that one out and it is super nice ;-)

I wanted a professional camera, but then i got the nikon d3200. Not only was the picture quality amazing, but so was the video quality, the only thing i regret is not having a af motor, just check out this website, I shot all of these photos with the d3200.

Unfortunately, the t1i I found on KEH has sold. I've been searching around some more and decided that my personal preference is still with Canon. I think that I will continue to wait for another t1i to show up on KEH then I will purchase an 18-55mm lens.

Good news! I found a great deal on a t1i on eBay and bought it today!
