My first moon shot

Never done one before. Looked up methodology and many confusing scenarios. So I went with what I understand currently and my thoughts were mostly correct. I guess that means I am learning. I think the next shots will be later in the night, maybe a full moon, and then a crescent. I tried f/8 though f/16. The f/11 ones seemed to be the sharpest. D3300, Sigma 150-600mm C. Tripod, remote, live view. No edit other than a crop. Sharpness was set in camera at 7. I am open for suggestions and/or comments.

ƒ/11.0, 0.0080 s (1/125), 100 ISO, single point focus, spot metering, auto WB.

I would have thought that 1/125th would have been too slow @ 600, but it worked well. Nice shot

Thanks. I started at 600 and immediately bumped it slower after seeing the dim moon. I would love to try it with a better camera just to see how different it could be. Pretty happy with it. I think changing locations, introducing other silhouettes around it will make it more interesting. Not really my forte, just exploring different things currently.

I think you mis-understood. I thought that at 600mm focal length on a crop camera, that there would be motion blur (the moon moving). But this is nice and sharp.

Great first try !!

I was going to take photos of the moon last night at 2,500mm and 5,000mm
My puny Tamron 150-600 sits atop my telescope as a guiding scope at times.
But I fell asleep early

I think that is quite nice for your first time. You need to get a 2x teleconverter.

I checked into a 2X converter but they really recommend a semi pro or professional DSLR for it to work correctly. Maybe there is something else that would work but not sure, probably should check with @DarkShadow. Someone on here had a focus issue with it and sent it back, I think it was @dannylightning.

image stabilization would probably fix that, not sure if he was using it or not.. but yes generally you want a shutter speed faster than the zoom of the lens if your not using stabilization. so a shutter speed faster than 1/900 would be ideal on a crop sensor camera and no stabilization..

i had the new sigma 1.4 x converter that was designed to use with my lens, i did send it back, looks like there was a firmware update for the lens that made it play a little nicer with that converter that i did not know about till after i sent it back.
