My first shots! Be gentle

You really need to get a lot closer for nature shots like those. Have any close ups. I find the 70-300mm lens works well and it is a cheap lens too!

First thing to do is stop putting your subjects dead center. We all did it when first starting, it's a common noob thing. ;-)

Thanks guys! I forgot to link to the rest of them

I was actually using a 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM (don't think i know what that means i just typed it off the box). Maybe I needed to get closer myself?

Well... If you don't understand what your lens' name actually means, then what you probably need is to do a little more reading in the basics of photography.
I'd bet you're using P or green-camera modes, so:

1) Try to do some reading and understand how a camera works and the basics of exposure... then stop using P mode and -at least- try A or S modes depending on the situation.
2) Also do some reading on how to improve your compositions... Just in the first 10 pages of any book you'll understand what's wrong with these pictures and probably others you're taking.

It seems you do understand the concept of isolating the subject and don't have unnecesary objects distracting in the image, although that can be due to the type of subjects and location you were shooting.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm trying to be helpful :)

edit: BTW if these are really your first shots, feel good because they're a lot better than most people. So, it's a good start. But that only means you need to push yourself harder to get better quickly and take advantage or your good 'eye' for photography

Thanks Lizardking!

I apprciate your feedback 100%!

I have purchased some starter books and am awaiting there arrival! :)

These are really my first shots, so it was nice to hear that they wasnt that bad!

Also: there isnt an S or A mode. I do have P, TV, AV, M and A-Dep. Which would be the equivlient to S & A?

hmm they should be Tv and Av but not sure what that A-Dep means... S = Shutterspeed priority - A = Aperture priority. They mean that you set one of the 2 parameters and let the camera calculate the other in order to get a 'correct' exposure, although it will of course be dependent of a good metering on your side. Basically, just make sure to choose the right mode for each situation depending on how much Depth of Field you're looking for and either if you want to freeze action or imply motion... At least for starters, then as you move forward you'll learn to do better metering and eventually start using Full Manual mode.

Tv is Time Value = S mode
Av is Aperture Value = A mode

Canon uses those vs s,a like on nikon

I'd love them to be closer but other than that looks nice. Good job ;D
