To the O.P: I agree these are underexposed and blurry. Im thinking thats due to being handheld and low light? Which means your gonna nead a faster shutter speed. Maybe possibly or I could be completely wrong (i'm still learning myself :thumbup Also when shooting kids its much better to get down to there level instead of shooting up. It'll look SO much better.

Your backgrounds are a bit distracting considering they are as clear as your main subject. Need a bigger aperture perhaps? I know these are probably just practice "in the moment" type thing.

One more thing! I think you should look up rule of thirds.

Yes, the focus is on his shoe, it is very under-exposed, and I think if you brightened it up the boy's skin would be a bit yellow.

In a shot like this the I think most fundamental rule (yes, because of the intent of images like this where it's obvious the intent was to get a n in-focus person I consider it a rule) is to make sure it's in focus. Some technical aspects are very subjective, but it's hard to convince someone that a portrait like this one is "good" when it's irreversibly blurry.

It induces many eye-rolls and snarky comments on this site if this is the case.

If you're going to make a post like this, then please ensure you also include some suggestions on how the OP can rectify the deficincies with his/her image, otherwise it's nothing more than a waste of free electrons.

No it's not facebook. It's a photo forum where people ask for help and a place to learn. Which is exactly what the O.P did, and in return he got a rude, sarcastic, pointless response.

If you can lighten it some with an editor and crop a little off the right side, I think it will improve things a bit. There's not a lot you can do with the focus, but the photo is certainly worth putting in the family album.
