My hat

My wife was giving me grief for hanging my hat on a dinning room chair. I looked over @ it I wondered if I could make a decent image of it.

Here are three attempts:


1. Minolta 50/1.4 wide open

2. Minolta 50/1.4 wide open

3. Vivitar 135/2.8 wide open.

Do any work? C&C welcome.

I prefer the first one too.
But, my eye wanders to the mixers as GeorgieGirl mentioned, and I'm intrigued by the portrait on the wall as well - who is it, if you don't mind me asking?

That would be his Father / my Grandfather. A picture of him taken while in the army (WWII I believe).

Q1: Two 1.5 litre bottles of non descript Caribbean Rum, two 1 litre bottles of Cuban rum & a 750ml bottle of red wine.

Q2: My dad, volunteer, Royal Canadian Engineers, prior to shipping overseas for WWll. His mom had this photo framed not expecting to see him again. He survived the war & died in 2000. I had the privilege of visiting the spot in Holland where he spent the last days of the war. He saw me for the first time just before my fourth birthday.

Thanks Ron and eccs19 for sharing the story, I appreciate hearing about them, especially when they were lucky enough to come home.

By circumstances, none of the men in my family fought in the war (my Dad's family was still in Holland during the occupation, and my Mom's family were here in Canada, but farmers and/or had physical limitations that prevented them fighting), so I am appreciative of anyone who did fight when my family couldn't.

Where was he at during the last days of the war?

Oh and to get back to the original topic (sorry Ron for de-railing your OP), the reason why I like the first shot best is because it's a more natural "pose" for your hat. The other two shots do have better lighting, but the mood is not the same as what is shown in the first shot.

The first shot is how I saw it & then I started thinking this is not working & tried the other two. I was expecting folk would say the background in #1 drew too much attention from the subject.

The background does draw attention from the hat, but I personally like the story that is told with the first image - the hat, the liquor and the photo in the background. I guess it depends on if you wanted to show just the hat, or more of a story.

I've read a bit about the Market Garden campaign, scary and sad (as is most of what I've read about the war). My Dutch grandparents didn't talk much about the war, but I know that they were beyond grateful to the Canadian soldiers, that's why they came here after the war was over. So, thank you to your Dad from my family!

you say non descript... what brand and type are they. even out of focus they look like anejo or gran anejo.


i travel alot to the D.R. always bring home 2-3 bottles of Ron Barcelo Gran Anejo. and a bottle of Ron Barcelo Imperial. the ONLY rum to ever receive 97 out of 100 points at the chicago beverage testing institute.. and rated best rum in the world 2 years in a row.

background distraction is something often told on the forum with some reason, but there exists also the environmental portrait. In this case, it gives context to the hat. Nice .

Sorry Photo Guy but why are you asking everyone to centre everything? Not having a pop, but nearly all your C&C asks people to centre everything. JUst want to understand why you are asking for this. Centreing the subject doesn't always work.
