TBH, what he should be shouting is 'Don't use on-camera flash. It takes away all the shadows that make my skin look nice, makes my face all white and puts red spots in my eyes.'

For a better picture opportunity, have your big guy hold the little guy opposite a large window, preferably north-facing, to have both illuminated by a large light source (the open window). Might have to scrunch yourself along the wall, to have the light slightly behind you, but that would be very flattering light. Remember: 1) Concept {take picture of my pride and joy} 2) Staging (find a big open window with glare-free light, and a large couch/bed/soft place facing the light, then put subjects when the light washes over them} 3) Execution {get the heads closer together, have them look at you, laugh, click} 4) Post-process {upload to computer, run a little toning, check the sharpness, crop out extraneous stuff} Now post.

If you get composition down, and then lighting, you will be on your
way to taking amazing photos. Almost to the point where you feel like it's
happened over night.
