I was trying to get the bokeh to be round. It was actually pretty hard to find the range. I was moving back and forth to get the size I wanted and anything above F2 on my 50mm f1.8 was starting to go octagonal. The first thing I tried was f1.8 and it was totally cats eye, so I went to f3.2 and it was like the UFC. So f2 made a pretty good circular bokeh.

Edit: Updated with all my tested apertures.

I shot in Jpeg basic and uploaded over half of them before I even noticed they were sideways. There's no actual subject, though so it doesn't really matter. There's the example of bokeh at different f stops with the nikkor 50mm f1.8D. I was 13 feet away from the lights. I started completely opposite of infinity and focused in just a little bit to make the initial dots smaller. Didn't change it after the first shot. They get smaller as the aperture does.

well alright.

I don't know about anyone else but I think it's a nice looking image. Do not confuse this with C&C.

Blake
Why you are showing, why not show us the other f/stop results?

The number of blades plays a part as well I believe. I know the nikon 50mm 1.8 has 7 blades. Canons 1.8 only has 5.

Updated with different apertures and explanation of the setup.

There wasn't a whole whole lot of difference in between and I was trying to stay close to full stops, unless it made a huge difference. That is the point where they really started to have pronounced sides. The only reason I put f1.8 there is because that is wide open for that lens.

No, i mean how it goes from decently round to decidedly polygonal from 2 to 2.8

Ahhh I got you. I thought you were asking me why I made the jump. Yea I was kind of surprised by that too. The 3rd stops in between started to have sides, but not like that.

Ok, to achieve this ... do you manually focus until nothing is in focus?

With Christmas coming up, would be cool to learn.

I thought the brokeh was very round looking at 1.8, even more so than 2.0... But I was really surprised to see how polygonal the brokeh got at 2.8. Cool test Blake, thanks!
