My Nephew Portraits

Here are a couple of contrast shots of my nephew using a point and shoot digital camera. C&C welcome.

Hi there!
You've certainly got an eye for lighting. It's great.

The only critique I have is on the composition and subject matter. It just doesn't do it for me and they don't grab me.

But lighting is usually what people have problems with, but you've done well on that.

Looking back on those first two. The shadows across his face really distract me.

The last one is fine.. but not stunning. The hand in the bottom left is distracting though.

I disagree about the lighting being good. Its weird for sure in the second picture with that shadow coming across all their faces.

The first is the best of the 3.

Here's another nephew this was taken at his 1st birthday party. He wasn't feeling very good that day.

I dont agree with the lighting being great.
I understand what you may have been going for. There is a technique called painting with light. ( using a flash light or similar light source in the dark).
This happens to blow out the lit parts and makes it very distracting as a result.
The one of the kid int he swing is the best... except for the hand on the swing in the bottom. The ones below that of the kid in the high chair eating cake are snap shots. I understand the "Rule Of Thirds" is a rule and rules are meant to be broken but not before you have a firm grasp and understanding of the rule you are breaking.

The eyes are dead center and the photos are very stagnant as a result.
Poor composition. The subject maybe be cute and adorable but a good subject doesn't always make a good photo.

I was'nt going for that lighting at all it just happen to go that way. I just like the shots of my nephews thats all I was going for, nothing eles.
