Looking at these now they look overexposed to me..

They are both overexposed. I would increase your shutter speed so in the first one it would freeze the action better. In the first one I wouldn't frame it so tightly.

You have the exposure on his face pretty close, unfortunately it's on the shadowed side so that will make everything else in the sunshine over exposed. A touch of fill flash can help out in situations like this if you have strong enough lights to fill for the sun.
