my next lens - wildlife photography

Hie everyone,

So I am looking to purchase my next lens. As I am somewhat addicted to big game photography, bears, moose, bison etc I am in need of a larger lens than what I have now. I currently just have a 200mm.

So I am looking at the 400mm to 500mm range. Right now I think 800mm is just to much for me.

I am looking for suggestions on a lens that isn't going to bankrupt me, but is still able to put out great quality images and will give me the length i need.

so please, shoot me some suggestions.

You don't say which camera system you use.

It's available in Canon mount now.

It's been out in a Canon mount since February.

You can buy them in a Canon mount.

Canon mounts have been available for a few months now.

I downloaded 20 of these full-size. All I can say is, "DAMN! I wish I had one of these puppies!!!"

I am impressed with the photos on several counts:
1. Overall sharpness and freedom from CA
2. High central sharpness, high zonal sharpness, and very good corner sharpness.
3. Impressive image stabilization is possible, given the lengths and the incredibly slow speeds shot with the stabilizing system and
4. The lens has a very "pretty" drawing style and nice background bokeh.

Just "getting to" the 400,500,and 600mm lengths is tough for most people, but this lens goes from 150 to 600mm, for just a little over a thousand dollars.

I think another Tamron cult classic design, like their 90mm AF-SP Macro, might just have been born. This lens is NOT "fast", but the samples show pretty decent image quality wide-open. As cameras move toward better and better higher-ISO performance, I think this lens will become a MUCH more-useful long tele-zoom. The samples they show I think are limited by the **camera"" and its sensor's performance at the higher ISO values. At lower ISO values, where the sensor does better, the lens can show its stuff.

I would LOVE to see this lens shot on a better sensor, like that of say the D800e.

If you give Sigma some thought 150-500 as KMH suggested. Here is some samples I am getting from it on my Canon 6D.

You certainly can't knock those shots Dave, excellent. As Dave shows, that's a good lens also.

The Tamron is one I would go for if I was going AF at the moment, Jaca has posted some amazing shots with it, but and its a big but, you have to know what you are doing with it, technique wise. It takes practise and patience to use larger lenses, it does take time. Canon "L" long tele's you won't see any CA, but they cost big time. With a 500-600, its a great balance with wildlife, good focal range those. 800mm is the sort of thing you give to your worst enemy, sit back and smile. A very hard focal length to come to terms with and decent ones, well you need a very friendly bank manager.

All the best and that Tamron is a good cost for what you are getting IMO.
