I was just practicing. I did shots with and without it to see what effect it had on my shots. I liked the ones with the speedlite better.

She probably used the flash for fill.. to cut down on the contrast between the bright sun highlights, and the darker shadows thrown by the tree he was under, and to light the shadows on his face. Common use for flash, actually!

Yeah, the ones I didn't use flash with for comparison had the problems you mentioned!
