I love the first shot! Beautiful DOF... Remember your rule of thirds Try not to center- it locks your subject in the frame.

The eyes are in deep shadow in both.
Play with reflectors (selfmade - styrofoam boards or so?) or the use of a mild fill-flash when he's out in the sun playing.
You chose a nice DOF here to blur out the background, which always looks good in kid portraiture, I think.

His eyes are definitely in shadow in the second. It was the expression that I loved. He was completely in motion riding his power wheels jeep. The first one is less shadow....his eyes are honestly that dark. I still tried to brighten it up a bit to see if it would make a difference.
