What's new

MY STEREO!!!! SHE FREAKIN' LIVES!!!

Let's see I've had:
92 Toyota Corolla - Blew engine
94 Honda Civic - Burned oil
96 Honda Civic - Got sideswiped, totaled
98 Honda Prelude - Burned oil badly Cylinder liners were junk from factory
02 Subaru WRX Wagon - Spun bearing, replaced block and sold
2000 Subaru Impreza RS Coupe - My all time favorite car
04 wrx sedan - Current, runs great a tad rusty.
06 Impreza Wagon - The family mobile. 250k

What were Honda thinking with the prelude, I actually really liked that car but why did they think fitting 2 steering racks was a good idea.

Ugh I know. It actually handled and when really well. But for some reason they used some new type of cylinder liner that apparently broke down wicked easy.

I've had so many cars over the years, Being from England many might be strangers to you all, but heres what i can remember:

1st car (hand me down from dad) Morris marina
Ford Capri 3.0 ghia
Rover SDi 3500 V8 (bullet proof V8 engine)
Rover SDi 2600 (straight six, the worst straight 6 ever built. )
VW golf GTI Cabrio Mk11
Mini Cooper (original Austin)
MG Metro 1275 Turbo
Range Rover Vogue SE 3500 V8
BMW 320i 1991
BMW 325i SE 1993
Alfa Romeo 33 (flat 4 engine) your not a true car enthusiast until you've owned an Alfa!
Volvo 460 (don't ask me why)
MR2 G-Limited Import (loved that car)
Jaguar XJ6 (lovely motor, but was too thirsty)
Currently driving a Mercedes CLK 230 Kompressor, had this for about 4 years now, Never missed a beat in all the time i've owned it, hardly wears tyres, Ive replaced all 4 once in about 50,000 miles, probably the most reliable car i've owned. :)

Ive owned many more but can't remember half of them.

I'm familiar with a few of those, I met my wife while working in Bedford. The Morris Marina is a classic, the Rover 3500 is a favourite, I had a Mini Cooper as my first car here in Canada when I was young, most Jaguars I consider pretty driveway baubles not too happy to be driven, and the Merc Kompressor is a really good car which I'd be pretty happy to own.

My highest mileage vehicle had been a 1 ton Ford diesel pickup that was retired at 700,000 miles. I now have a ten year old Dodge 3500 dually 4x4 daily driver that is pilling on the miles.

Thats damn good mileage, Older non-turbo diesels could easily clock up the mileage without problems though, Modern Diesels have got no chance, they are making the engines smaller (some modern diesels are only 1.4 litre or smaller) and making up for it by squeezing every ounce of power out of them with turbo's and 16 or 20 valve engines.
I've been a tech for over 25 years now, and i hate the way engines are being built, everything is plastic, and just not designed to last or take apart. Inlet manifolds, rocker covers, EGR valves, fuel filters, all plastic! even nuts and bolts are slowly being replaced with stupid plastic clips. I really need to get out of this trade.

My wife and I had this of Hondas for years, and t all started because I had a 1990 golf that was an utter train wreck while all my friends had Hondas that were flawless.

We had...

1994 Honda Civic LX
1994 Acura Integra GS
1998 Honda Prelude
1998 Honda Prelude Type SH
2000 Honda Passport (piece of crap Isuzu and a huge mistake)
2000 Honda S2000 (awesome car)
2003 Acura 3.2 TL Type S (my god I loved that car)
2004? Honda Prelude Type SH (needed new car, this was all that interested me)
200? Acura mdx (previous version)
200? Honda pilot
2009 Acura MDX (new style)

What I can tell you is all the RECENT Honda people I talk to say Honda has gone waaaaaay down will, and the forums are SCREAMING over it.

What's more is Honda used to come out with these amazing cars with cool features and neat innovation for short money... These days, there's not a single car in the lineup that is interesting. Acura has a few nice models, but the dorks are charging BMW prices and the sales guys are now wearing suits. Our sales guy started reading me this line about how Acura is a luxury line and fully equal to or better than BMW, and therefore priced appropriately.

I laughed and said, "uh no dude... You guys are the value prop in the luxury world. You give me nearly the same experience, though a Japanese equivalent, and you give it to me cheaper... Or I'll just go buy an Audi or BMW. "

Btw, I loved my Preludes. :)

110k isn't an awful lot of miles if its well looked after, The main problem with the R32 is the suspension is a lot stiffer than standard Golfs so it does have a tendancy to shake things apart as you've experienced.
The V6 engine is a good lump, don't skimp on good quality oil though. :)
Most likely your suspension issue will either be a top strut mounting or bottom ball joint on the wishbone arm. both pretty common.

Yes! The little car does tend to take a beating, esp on new england roads in the winter. It's definitely a wear/tear thing, so I'm not holding it against her, but it's still a bummer. Esp after I just spent $550 on her for a serpantine belt failure. :)

I always wanted one of those or a mk2 gti 16v.
It seems like vw electrical systems were designed in the 1930s.

My poor wrx is up past 150k

All German car electrical systems tend to be a mess. They're way better now than they were 20 years or so ago, though.

Mk2... were those in the 90s? Way underpowered for how heavy they were. The original GTIs were a freakin' blast. Little go-carts.

WRX is a fun car, though. :) 150k miles. Nice! How's it holding up?

Ha! A rabbit driving a rabbit.

I have found that all car electrical is a mess. At least it's not british, reverse grounded (positive ground) or 24V! My buddy rebuilt an old MG that had all of four fuses for the entire car, what a mess.

My 4 cylinder Jeep Cherokee is at 187k now, no major problems. I replaced the entire suspension last year, steering box ripped off the frame (it's a known problem with the gearbox mount...), new brakes, alternator, radiator few years ago, there are a few leaks here and there but it still shifts so smoothly for its miles. I'm looking to get rid of it but it's been a very reliable and utilitarian for my uses.

British and German are the worst offenders. British use wiring from the dark ages and the Germans use the more is more philosophy. I swear VW's motto it "Why use 3 parts when you can use 30?".

How do you people go through soo many cars?! I've had 3 cars in 17 years...lol Two of those cars were used when I bought them. You people crazy.

The Germans a good engineers, that's for sure. But yeah, they seem to make things unnessarily comPlicated.

I bet they were VW's, jetta right?

I went through a "phase" where I beat the piss out of my cars and modified them to do racing. That lasted until I realized it was expensive and I was poor.

Haha...no Jetta. I had a Geo Metro in HS that I paid for myself. lol Laugh all you want but the GEO was an awesome car. That went to almost 200k miles. My next car was a Dodge Neon that I had for 12 years and that had about 80k when I sold it.

Boys and their toys.

My buddy had a geo metro in high school. I remembered he handed over $400 in homeroom to some guy we didn't know for a car he had never seen. What a beautiful mess. Fifth wouldn't stay in gear so the passenger would have to hold it on the highway. Yours wasn't teal blue, was it?

I'm surprised how many cars people go through, too. I still have my first, a 1991 Jeep wrangler, that I refuse to let die. I replaced the body, welded up the frame, new front end/rear end, lifted suspension, made my own exhaust, roll cage, suspension seats + harness, new electrical, old school grill/hood, custom dash, rebuilt my transmission and transfer case, made my own drive shafts, all new steering and front end parts, one million spare axles, have had every combination of top and doors imagineable, full body armor, 1/4" thick skid plates and I even won a $1,200 bumper in a contest I completely forgot about entering.

Then I bought a Cherokee and did a bunch of unneccesary things. Thankfully, the 1/4" thick rear bumper saved it from being totalled last month :D

Yes, boys and their toys
