What's new

My very first and only Hummingbird shot... now i am hot... lol

You might find it difficult if you only have the on-camera flash. They aren't exactly the strongest or the most flattering when it comes to lighting.

Thats all i have for now.. but i have confidence with all of your help that i will at least improve... and get a good photo i can be happy with, even with my limited expertise and equipment... thanks so much

Using flash is a good idea, but it will also slow the shutter speed down and this could cause more blur in the image. Many add-on flashes (such as Canon) will allow high speed synch, shooting at all shutter speeds. Not very strong, but at short distances can be effective. Here's one of mine from last year:

Absolutely perfection... just gorgeous.. and thanks for the help.. i intend to try it all.. and just see what works and what doesn't .. one thing about the feeders.. is they come back to them every few minutes..enough time for me to change the settings and try something else.. lol.. i hope..

Thats why you drop the ambient if you want to completely freeze the wings. The ambient light is what is exposing the blurry wings. A 580EX can get a flash duration of I believe 1/35000 of a second @ 1/128 power. No way that birds wings are moving faster than that. The fastest hummingbird every recorded was like 80 beats per second.
