Most folk were port-side waiting for the whales to reappear & they came up starboard where Jeanne was almost by herself. She shot with a Panasonic GF1 & 14-45 kit lens in full auto. I straightened & cropped the pics.

Nice pics, especially the double breech. Whale shots are tough timing. However, I've found that my best whale photos have something in the background, land, rocks, a boat etc. that gives scale to the photo. Of course, that is not always in your control on a commercial trip.

Hey, she did better than the people on the other side! She captured the moment. They didn't. Points to her.

lovely shots, I know she was pleased with these. We went to Alaska last year and went on a whale watching tour. I was one of the few who got the shot of the baby humpback breaching. It was the most exciting part of the trip. :)

I've been on a few trips up in the North Atlantic where we didn't see one freaking whale. Its always good when you get something more than ripples in the water :)

I hope you don't mind, in the spirit of whaling that I post a few of my own! (all of them were taken with my point and shoot before I bought a DSLR)

Shows you do not need a SLR to get decent photos.

Yeah, as long as you don't blow them up past 8x10 not too bad. I think the Baja grey whales were taken with a 3mp Kodak. Alaska humpback with a Kodak superzoom Z710 7mp. I touched up the color a bit (maybe a bit too much on the first one...) With the Mexico pictures, it helps that we were in a small motorboat and the whales get pretty close. If they had been at a distance, the p&s wouldn't cut it. I'd love to get back out and take some more with the DSLR though.

I saw the photos on your other thread, very good! I really like the fluke with water dripping shot and the blow-spout shots!

Whale, they are good photos...good job to the wifey....nice photos in the other thread as well Ron....

I like these shots. We were in Maui in 2008 and on a sail trip we ran across a bunch of dolphins. I was lucky enough to be pointing my camera in the exact direction when a spinner dolphin jumped out of the water in full breech. I caught him in the air half-twisted. It was very cool.

Lets see it! BTW, its nice to see some aquatic wildlife on this forum as opposed to *another* baby photo. Although, my last 1000 photos have all been of my 2 month old baby girl. ;) I haven't posted any yet, but I could probably use some feedback... I'd love to get back out on the water though, I need a vacation!

Ron... looks to me like you've got competition; if she leaves the house wearing high rubber boots, a trench-coat and floppy hat, you might as well just put your camera gear up on eBay!

This is the shot of the spinner dolphin. You can imagine that getting a focused, perfectly exposed shot was not possible. The far shot is not bad--not great but not horrible. The cropped image is out of focus but you can see his twisted body. The captain said these are pretty rare dolphins and we ran into a whole group of them on a sail trip to Lanai'i.
