I see these all the time but I never see what's making them. I'm guessing the backs of turtles or possibly alligators but does anyone know for sure?

With the slight squiggly wave action I would guess an alligator. Turtles don't stay above water while traveling that far. I visit a lake several times a year that gets overgrown with lilly pads and while kayaking through them sometimes leave a trail, although it is normally straight. Speaking of straight, maybe it was Seal Team "5" and the sixth member was one of those don't ask don't tell "ladies" that had to take a boat because it had just painted it's nails.
