Why do i need three different nd filters 3,6,9 and do i want soft or hard transition for landscapes

ZOMG there are now two "The Traveler's!"

Sorry, I'm not too savvy on ND filters (I don't use them much). But I had to point out that there are now two people with almost identical forum handles.

I guess you mean Graduated ND filters since since there is no transition when talking about plain ND filters. AFAIK, the 3,6,9 numbers basically mean that the filter cuts the amount of light in the scene by .3,.6 and .9 stops respectively in order to lessen the dynamic range.

People use 3 so they can stack filters.

If you have a .3, .6, and a .9 - stacked you also have 1.2 (.9 stacked with a .3), a 1.5, and a 1.8.

Each .3 of an ND filter blocks 1 stop of light. so a .6 blocks 2 stops, and a .9 blocks 3 stops.
