ND Filters

Hey guys,
I've been researching online for some ND filters, but I'm somewhat lost. After getting one, I plan to do a lot of shooting during both midday and during lower light scenarios. Most of the shots will be of water, so lakes, waterfalls, etc.

I just need some input or recommendations on one/some.

All the ones I've seen seem to have low f-stop (2-3) reductions, and I'm hoping for something upwards to 6-10. It'll be mounted on a 58mm diameter lens (as well as 52, but I have step up rings).

Any suggestions?

I have a B+W 110 ND filter (10 stops). It's fantastic for long exposures even in broad daylight. Here's on of my shots with it:

I carry at times a B+W 110 3 stop and 10 stop in 60mm with step up rings for various lenses.

Cokin and Kood do sets that can be picked up with various stackable 85mm square filters. They are good value and you can adjust strengths by combining more than one filter

As jaomul stated above, the square filters can be stacked. You can also stack the round filters, but to avoid vignetting, get filters that are larger and use step-up rings. But stacking can degrade your images since you are adding more glass or plastic in front of your lens.

I considered at one time getting a kit of ND filters in a normal 1-5 stop range and stacking when I needed more but then I took some time to really think about my needs. I came to the conclusion that there are only two things I need from ND filter. In bright daylight when I need to shoot at a wider aperture and when I wanted to do long exposures in daylight. For that I figured a 3 stop and 10 stop would fit those needs without having to stack filters. Its been working so far.
