Neck Strap Help?

Ok... I need a new neck strap replacement. I've researched, and searched on TPF and can't QUITE find what I need.

I already have a BlackRapid, so I'm covered there.

What I need is a decent neck strap that I can relatively easily get on/off my camera.

I need it to have all metal components for fasteners, buckles, etc. No plastic.

Ideally I'd prefer not to have stupid dongles left on my camera when I disconnect it.

Right now I have something that fits this description, and it has metal clips that I push in a portion of to "open them" and slide them onto the rings already on my camera. It works great, but they are a little big so a bit awkward.

I'm wondering what it is that you need that you're not getting from the Blackrapid? I have one as well and can't think of a reason to get another neck strap?

I've got a couple of THESE. They actually have TPF logos on them, from back in the day when they were selling them.

I like that I can easily remove the padded part and clip the ends together. I most often use it that way, with the short strap acting like a wrist strap. Sometimes I take two padded section and make an extra long strap to go across the chest, rather than around the neck or over one shoulder.

But it has plastic parts...so not really what you're looking for.

Yeah the OPTEch straps are what I'd recommend, but again they are plastic clips (that said I've never actually read of one breaking, and if it were common it would appear a lot more). Personally I've no problem with the OPTech carrying the weight of a 2*TC, 70-200mm f2.8 and a 7D with grip - I think once you' push up to the heavier 300mm f2.8 and similar lenses then you would be looking for a specific strap connected to the lens itself and far more durable.

Yep, like Big Mike, I have the OPTech with the TPF logo on.

I rarely use the padded neck part anymore, instead I clasp the two short straps together and use it more as a hand strap.

I've also got a free SmugMug strap that's pretty good.

Get a Tamrac Neoprene (boomerang I think is the name ) It has detachable clips that work with other tamrac straps and clips.

This has plastic clasps, but the "Crumpler double safety lock". Might be worth looking into.

Also, if you have specific needs/wants for a strap. It wouldn't be too hard to have one made. Just find the type of clasps & buckles that you want, get the appropriate sized webbing and sew it up (or have someone sew it for you).

I did this with a strap ordered on line. I will warn you though, finding the clips you want may prove to be harder than expected. I visited four fabric shops in the city and couldn't find 1/4" web, the last stop was to a surplus store that makes military gear and paint ball gear, the guy had none, but one look at the sample of what I had and he told me where to get it. It was a the hand grip I was working on at the time and it turned out that I needed to buy a cat leash!!!

The neck strap I bought had a flimsy webbing, that was easy enough to replace, it was the buckles that were difficult to find. I also ended up using a clip connector that I found at work...holds a 23lb machine gun!!! Yes, machine gun!

If you want metal clips, check out the clips available for motorcycle helmets; Amazon.com: NEW ECHO QUICK RELEASE HELMET BUCKLES, BLACK,: Automotive like this one. I and several of my riding buddies use them and they are solid. The down side is the size of the webbing that you would need. It could be sewn into larger webbing though.

I work at an industrial fabric company, so we have all sorts of webbing, clips & buckles etc. I don't think we have 1/4" webbing though. Most of what we have in-stock is heavy duty.

Big Mike, That's the problem, the Hand strap has webbing small enough to go through the loops on the camera where no comercially available webbing will. The guy at Drop Zone took one look and recognized that and told me to try the cat leash. Even Campers Village was stumped and I talked with their repairs person. Either way, full metal buckles may be difficult to find. With the gear we use at work and what we subject it to when we use it, Fastex holds up quite well for being plastic.
