Need a solid wide angle lens that doesn't cost a fortune.

A lot of good feedback, I've narrowed it down to the 17-40 and the 24-105, I personally like the range the 24-105 offers, but I understand where you're coming from on the ultra wide at 17-40 as well.

Those are good lenses...but they won't be all that wide until you upgrade to full frame.

I understand on the crop body it won't be too wide, I'm ok with that for now as I definitely intend to go FF as soon as the 5D prices come down a bit (hoping in the next few days the upgrades roll out)

The price on the 5DmkII (that I've been seeing) has fluctuated between $2299 and $1999. I don't think it will drop below $1999, unless there is some sort of special offer or sale.
