Need help on Nikon 70-210 lens

I'm thinking about buying used Nikon 70-210 lens for a 100$ bucks.
I have a Nikon D40 and I already know it wont focus on my camera, but I really need a lens with a good zoom and this is the cheapest one I found
I don't know if I should get it or just invest in something better for more money.
I heard it's a good lens, however, it's old and it won't auto focus..
Any advice?

And it won't meter.

get a 55-200 instead. you'll get metering, (slow) AF but hey, still better then a 70-210.

It really depends on which 70-210 it is; there were a number of incarnations of this lens (assuming it's actually a Nikkor lens, and not a Vivitar, Tamron, etc) ranging from mediocre to pretty good. I think Lodd's suggestion is a good one. The 55-200 is a decent lens which will both focus and meter with your body. It's <$300 brand-new, and can be found on eBay/Craig's List for well under $200.
