I am just trying to get some input from some professionals...

Is a Nikon D80 adequate to shoot a sports game such as basketball/football?

This of course is paired with a 50mm 1.8 and 70-200 2.8

It's going to depend hugely upon what sort of lighting condition you're going to be dealing with for your shoot-- a really well lit game and you might be fine, but dark and poorly lit and you could be up a creek.

If you're just picking a camera, the D80 is going to be limited compared to other options because it's not going to focus as fast as pro or prosumer cameras focus, and because you're not going to be able to take advantage of a high frame per second rate.

What I would do, if I were you. Take your d80 out to a local field where kids practice and play on weekends. This will be a great way to answer your own question. I like to shoot sports in shutter priority, but I haven't done a whole lot of sports shots. As stated, lighting is important. Luckily, most fields I have dealt with have had great lighting, even at night.
