What's new

need some help choosing gear

Ironically, I just ordered a DSLR and my budget is also around $1000. I chose the Nikon D3100 because it's cheap and will give me the ability to buy two extra lenses with it (I am planning on the 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR [~$300] and 35mm f/1.8 [~$200]). It was only $530 off Amazon with the kit lens, so why not. The cheaper price gives me more flexibility with other equipment; it's better to invest in lenses rather than a camera body that will be outdated quickly. I did look into other cameras like the D90, but it was at least $700 new and I'd rather go with a new D3100 than a used D90. You can get a D90 used for around the $500 range on eBay which is a pretty good option.
As for Canon, I prefer the selection of Nikon lenses available to me and the T3 (1100D) isn't really my cup of tea. The T2i is still considerably more than the D3100 and I don't plan on filming many videos. If necessary, I can get external audio and sync it with the video.
I'm not a fan of how many megapixels some cameras provide; they just fill up my hard drive.

I guess a lot guys didnt read up before considering purchase. Obvious question is to buy the best at the lowest cost. There is no such product. Even with the best, without the right know how, you would not be able to capture the picture. Budget is the start point. With that, understand the limit and ask if that is acceptable. Next option is to consider used product to lower cost. In my opinion, USD$1k is possible with a pre-owned camera with kit lens.
