So for a beginner starting off with a small budget (which the OP is), a single speedlight and a few modifiers isn't good enough?

It all depends on what you want to do with your lights. I prefer to use my speedlights for most things. Those suckers are small, light and can be shoved nearly anywhere. However, there are many things I can't do with them or I would need about 8 of them (or more) to do what I want. Instead studio strobes are then a much better option.

I also find that usually when someone says STUDIO lights they are slightly aware of what they want and they mean studio lights-not always. So, the recommendation is studio lights. I also error thinking that if someone is asking for studio lights they already have at least one, good, dedicated speedlight unit to use with them. Which I probably shouldn't do. Stobes usually naturally come after the speedlight in the things people want to acquire... KWIM?

It's a good start, however, a $150 budget isn't. Especially when lights (plural) is in question.
