negitive and positive sheets in photography

hello i am trying to learn as much as i can about old pack film and how it works i have a basic understanding but am having trouble figuring out what exactly negative and positive sheets are made of. Are they different material if so what is each of them I've been trying to figure this out for days but cant find it. i know photo paper is a light sensitive paper but i don't know if that is both the negative and positive one or the other or neither any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
