New Camera

Ok....I'm a newbee and I know this topic has been probably covered before, but.....
My current camera is point and shoot Nikon L1. It's a good camera but I'd like to upgrade.
I really don't do that much photography; an occasional night shot, family photo (graduation, holiday, etc), closeup, etc. but I'd really like to get a new camera. Would a high end P&S like a Nilon L105, Canon SX, Panasonic Lumix DMX-ZX 47 be a good idea, or would an older\used DSLR be a better idea?

It depends on what kind of photography you'd like to do and your budget. A DSLR will give you more control but but if all you do are snapping pictures then a P&S would be more suitable. A P&S is also easier to carry around, if you don't want to carry a large camera with you. I recently got an older Nikon D80 as a backup camera for $250 in excellent condition.

I'd like to stay under $400. I would say that most would qualify as a P&S, but for the closeups (my SWMBO's jewelry - very important) and for the night shots (concert mostly) I'd like them to come out very nice.

For close up stuff, I have never been able to get close to the quality of a DLSR and a decent lens. You'll have similar issues with night shoots with a P&S at that price range. Then again, I don't use a lot of P&S cameras.

For DSLR's I've been looking at the Canon T1i and the Nikon D3100, for P&S I've been looking at the Canon SX30 IS, Nikon L105, and PPanasonic Lumix DMX-ZX 47. I would of course be open to any other options as well.

That D80 seems like a nice camera too Vtec44.

The sx 40 is a nice upgrade from the 30. I might be selling one, pm for details.

Well....I found an Olympus E-510 with a 40-150mm lens (sub $200) so I picked it up. And with that we have the first photo.
