You could really grow into a 50D, 50mm f/1.8, and a 580EX II. You really need fast glass for kids (once they can move), and a flash really improves those indoor shots. I love chasing around my 2 year old.

If you don't care about video the d80 might be a better option to save money because the major difference between that and the D90 is video. D90 has HD video and D80 doesn't. The video on the D90 is pretty crappy.

Actually, it is more than just the video. CCD vs CMOS sensor is big enough for the jump. (If I need to choose between D80 and D90).

You can get good pics with a Nikon D3100 for example and it's not too expensive. But I would put more money on the lens. The lens has a big influence on the outcome of your photos. and since you're going to take more portrait pictures, you should look for a lens that works great on those kind of pics.
