new flash... advice please.. pic included

I just got this external flash and am trying to get use to it.. What do you think about this photo with the flash? Is the flash too much? Without it, it was definitely too dark.. I didnt try it with the on camera flash. I just bounced the light upwards and this is what I got.

Good, but perhaps it could be just a little better. If you look carefully at his forehead (Thing 1 or Thing 2?) image right, you'll see it's quite bright, whereas the lower left side of his face is a bit on the dark side. I think a diffuser would have really helped to even this out. If you didn't get one with your flash you can easily make one out of a piece of translucent plastic. Try that and see what your results are; you may have to adjust your flash output a little, but it will be a good learning tool.
