Hi!
This is Syamantak, based in Chennai, for now.

I'll be getting a DSLR this summer. With so many brands out there, it's getting very confusing. Nikon, Canon and Olympus were the most mentioned by friends and family.

My budget (for the camera and AF,VR kit lens combined) is about Rs. 30,000, which comes out to be some 660 USD. Please recommend the best DSLRs in that range.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome - visited your city a couple of years ago, and loved it. Your best bet will be to go into a store and find the camera that 'feels' best and fits your budget. I will suggest a long, hard look at the Pentax line; in my opinion the best value in entry/mid-level DSLRs.

Pentax makes some great stuff. Depends what you want, OP.

Pentax k-x is a good bang for the buck.

Canon T2i and Nikon's D3100 are both really good entry-level DSLRs that offer both great image quality and 1080p HD video.

Thanks! Will do the same and take a closer look at pentax too. Any recommendations on which books to start studying with, until I get the camera?

Books and online web pages that discuss visual image composition would be a good place to start until you have a camera.

The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos

Guidelines for Better Photographic Composition: Introduction

You can start learning about the exposure triad using an online camera simulator: The SimCam: Film and Digital Camera Simulator - Photonhead.com

I would also recommend reading the tutorials at www.cambridgeincolor.com

Wow! Thanks, will go through them as soon as possible.
