Took some shots of a friend yesterday. What do you think? Feel free to edit if need be. I personally like how it turned out. Is the background too distracting?

Could you post the original?

This photo really doesnt grab my interest, the background is distracting. It lacks really basic compositional techniques (not to say it is badly shot), so it really doesnt invoke thought. tl;dnr: It's boring. Compose the photo so it is interesting. (this of course applies to future pictures you will take)

He has a sort of purplish tint to his face and some hot spots on his shoulders. The background isn't the worst, but it could be better.

He's under exposed, the background is to bright (light advances, dark receeds), the camera angle and lens used are distorting him. His head looks enormous compared to his feet.

Why is he squinting? Try to keep nostrils out of people shots. If he had lowered his chin just slightly his nostrils would have been hidden.

The bright spots on his shoulders are more than hot spots, they are totally blown out (pure white, no details visible.

When a subject is backlit flash can be used to balance the light in the scene. Using the built-in flash manually set to a less than full power setting (for fill light) can make for much better lighting.

Technically this is not a great photo but for some reason I like it lol

I actually did use a fill flash with my 430ex II. I had a softbox on it as well, and stopped the flash down from full power. How else should I have done it with that? Maybe bring the flash power up a little more? I felt like if i would have done that, his skin would have been more white than it actually was. Thanks for the info!

Was the 430EX II on the camera hot shoe? If it was, the 'softbox' was to small to make much of a difference to the light quality, plus the softbox 'ate' a lot of the light the 430EX II made.

Yes it was on the hotshoe, and I had a 6x8 softbox on it. So should I have not reduced the flash so much? I felt like if I wouldn't have, he would have lost skin color, or have become over exposed. I really appreciate your help! Thanks again.

more interested in you 8thgen SI :) FG2?

He would benefit from a little bit more top space. If the background were a bit darker, it would have more impact. The close camera positioning and the wide-angle lens add quite a bit of distortion, and visual impact as well. All he is missing is a skateboard.

Hahaha thanks for the input Derrel. So in this case, if i gave him more top space i would have cut off his feet. Or, are you saying reposition back a little farther? My understanding was to "correctly" compose a picture, there should be near even amount of space around your subject. I'll upload a picture later of myself actually taking this picture so you guys can see. I was standing on a chair.
