The color is amazing, but I agree about the angle; it doesn't really do it for me either.

I actually quite like the first shot. What I like about it is the fact I had to kinda guess what I was looking at.

Don't let anyone scare you off. Diagonals are -good-. It just so happens that this picture didn't work out so great.

Some things that may have helped it a bit (not necessarily mind you, but possibly...)

1. Take up more of the frame with the subject (less sky)
2. Try not to take a picture pointing directly into the sun. (sometimes it works, but often it does not)
3. Look for more interesting subjects (fences can work sometimes, but this one is probably too simplistic)

I agree, initially I thought it was some sort of memorial, didn't realize it was a fence until I saw the second photo.

hmm, diagonals are usually a good tool to bring attraction to a picture but these doesn't tell me something.
