If you're going Nikon, spend the few extra dollars for the N80. The N75 and below are missing some features that I wouldn't want to be without, such as the ability to set the film speed manually.

The only Nikon N400 cameras I've ever heard of are the N4004 and N4004s. There is some mention of them here:

I don't think you'll be happy with one unless you get a REALLY good deal on it.

Hey my suggestion would be to bring your wife to shop for a camera, have her hold them and try them out, i.e. fire the shutter and get a general feel for the camera. You will be shocked by the prices in the store. Make sure she looks at camera bodies that are around or over 500 dollars. When she finds one she likes tell the guy behind the counter that you will think about it, and then secretly shop Ebay for that model. On ebay you will prolly find that same model at half the price in the store. Then you could buy another lens or two for her and suprise her with the camera she really wants, plus extras. She will think you spent a ton, but you will know differently. LOL
